Dog beach on Longboat Key being discussed
with a look of contentment on his face in the
sand at Venice Dog Beach.
The popularity of Venice Dog Beach cannot be disputed. I know many people who drive to Venice several times a week to let their canine companions frolic in the ocean. They also use gas to get there, stop and grab some lunch or maybe walk off the water and window shop while Fido dries off.
The untouchable Longboat Key is now floating the idea of a dog beach. There are apparently many who like the idea but some who don't. The most common myth is the dog poop which the naysayers mistakenly believe will be left laying, discarded for some tourist family to step in and become disgusted so they will never come back to Longboat Key again.
After having lived in this area for well over 30 years, and having vacationed here as a kid and young adult from central Florida, I can tell you a dog beach where paying guests can bring their companions will be a big hit with the tourists, many who have dogs and bring them on vacation.
Why not have a win situation? I am all for a dog beach on Longboat Key. It is much closer to me than Venice and I would just as soon take my dog there and spend my money.
