Finding a home for Sandler
When volunteering at a shelter, you fall in love with all the dogs. Each dog has its' own personality and the key is finding a human who fits in with a dog. If you can match a person with the particular traits of a dog, you can make an adoption which sticks.
Some dogs take a while longer while some dogs get adopted quickly.
Sandler is one of the unlucky ones. While he is extremely smart, he is also very athletic and can jump fences. He runs like the wind with his nose to the ground and believes hum
ans are the least interesting thing in the play yard. He also suffers from Black Dog Syndrome. He is large, he is black and he does get overlooked for the flashier dogs.
Sandler has had bad luck with his owners and Satchel's Last Resort is the third shelter which has taken him in to try and find him a home.
Yesterday, I was lucky enough to spend some time with him and what a fabulous dog he is. Now, he is full of energy and he does run circles around you, but he wants so very badly to bond with a human and find a person to call his own.
Although I began working on some basic obedience, sit is the only command he really knows. Before our time was up, he had almost mastered down and would climb the catwalk with no fear.
This morning, armed with a pouch full of treats, we will work on down, off and the agility equipment to see if I can get him focused on me and not everything else which can capture his attention.
Sandler is still a very young dog, just over a year, and would make a great companion for someone who wanted a jogging partner or a camping buddy. He is too rambunctious for small children so an adult only home would be best. He also used to play with other dogs and we are hoping this is still true, although we have not found him a playmate yet to help work off his energy.
I will be working with him every weekend and am hoping it will not take long to get him focused and find him the perfect home.
