Saving them one at a time (or in this case, five)

This photo is of a dog named Dakin. She came in to an already over-crowded county animal control facility with four newborn puppies. She had no place to go and no one to call a family. When the call went out for a rescue for her, Satchel's Last Resort, like so many other times, answered the call. The thought that a mommy dog and her puppies might lose their life because of crowded conditions is simply appalling to those of us in rescue.
On top of the fact she was in danger, she was very underweight and heartworm positive. Satchel's scrambled and found a foster home where she and the puppies could flourish, she could gain some weight and then after the puppies had found homes, could begin her heartworm treatment.
As is so common in Florida, Dakin was sniffing around in the yard on Saturday and was bitten by a pygmy rattlesnake. She was rushed to the emergency vet and was treated for snakebite. The photo above was taken yesterday. She is doing okay, no side effects except swelling, and is expected to make a full recovery.
Unfortunately, all of this treatment was expensive but we think she and her puppies are worth it.
Shelters are all existing on a wing and a prayer right now. They are all bursting at the seams with unwanted dogs and cats who have been dumped or relinquished by their owners. Some are part of cruelty cases and must be housed until the case goes to court.
We all talk about going no-kill but we need our community to step up and help us. People wring their hands, roll their eyes and speak with disgust when an animal has to be euthanized but don't adopt, don't volunteer, don't donate and leave rescues and animal agencies hanging out to dry.
I am asking for donations for Satchel's Last Resort to help with the care of Dakin and almost seventy other last chance animals. You can click on the link above if you want to do a Paypal donation or you can mail a check to Satchel's Last Resort, 8101 Coash Road, Sarasota, FL 34241 if you prefer. Satchel's is a 501(c)3 so your donations are tax deductible and every donation helps. It helps us continue to save dogs like Dakin who just need a little help and a second chance.

Animal abuse comes in all shapes and sizes

Every time I open my email or check my headlines for animal news, there is at least a couple of dozen reports on abused animals. These can range from horses to gerbils, dogs and cats to lions and everything in between.
It continues to sadden me that John Q. Public shows such disregard for life. I cannot fathom seeing some of the abuse I have seen and be able to turn my back and walk away. I am amazed at the uneducated who believe animal abuse does not concern them.
The vicious cycle of abuse is witnessed by children who begin to believe it is okay to chain an animal. It is okay to deny food and water to a pet. It is okay to dump an unwanted pet out in the country because they eat too much or cannot be housebroken or any of the myriad of reasons humans come up with to discard an animal.
I did not grow up as part of the privileged few. We continued to lived paycheck to paycheck until I was well into my teens. Our family pets may have existed on Jim Dandy Dog Ration and table scraps, but they never went hungry. They all received basic vet care and no one, including my extended family would have ever thought to tell my father and mother the animals were not welcome in their home.
When I was a new mom going through a bad divorce with no extra money to take care of Bigfoot, my dog, my parents stepped up and took him home to live with their two dogs until I could get back on my feet. My father cringed at the thought of giving the dog away.
Please be mindful of what you see around you. People who would discard or intentionally hurt a defenseless animal come in all shapes and sizes including children. Don't let it continue on your watch.

Don't forget the horror of Michael Vick's actions

Although the years have passed since the atrocities committed by Michael Vick and his cohorts, we should always keep these fresh in our minds.
Michael Vick served his time although was never judged for animal cruelty. Many of the dogs have died but more are still living in much better conditions.
Vick is once again playing football in the NFL and pulling down big bucks. He has never, ever shown remorse as far as I can tell but is simply mouthing the words expected. Many feel he has paid his dues but in my mind he can never make up for the pain and suffering he caused so many animals.
The reason this needs to be in the forefront now is because the time he was prohibited from owning a dog is expiring. The three years is up. He can own another dog.
"As Little Red Dog lay on the ground, fighting for air, Quanis Phillips grabbed its front legs and Michael Vick grabbed its back legs. They swung the dog over their head like a jump rope then slammed it to the ground. The first impact didn't kill it. So, Phillips and Vick slammed it again. The two men kept at it, alternating back and forth, pounding the creature against the ground until, at last, the little red dog was dead." --The Lost Dogs by Jim Gorant
Please don't let time alter our feelings on what transpired here. Please never forget the horrors committed. Please remember the dogs who died.

Thoughts from vacation

After ten glorious days of vacation, it is back to work for me today. I took a break from the blog, but not from the mission of rescuing animals.
While I was in Key West I noticed several things. The Dogs on Duval pet store is still in operation which makes me sad, but they have put a disclaimer on their door stating all their puppies are from family breeders and when they come to the pet store, they are taken home every night with the family. This doesn't make me happy, but I guess the fallout after their opening was enough for them to post the notice. (family breeders can still be puppy mills)
I also observed a local walking two beautiful Huskies one morning while I was having breakfast. Why would you have a Husky in Key West, Florida even if you loved the breed? It was so hot down there (even for me and I love the heat) I wore as little as possible and I don't have a thick, fur coat. I sure hope their owner keeps the air conditioning on high for them.
I had an interesting conversation with a young man who was a bartender about his chocolate Labrador. I hope I convinced him to have the dog neutered after our conversations concerning rescue. He was not working when we were talking but his best friend was bartending and she was on my side. Her dog, a pit bull/Weimaraner had been neutered.
I met Princess, a cute, little mixed chihuahua who owned the bed and breakfast I stayed at. Dogs are welcome in their cottages if you have a mind to visit Key West and don't want to leave your friend behind. You can check them out here and tell them Jean sent you.
I found out in Key West most folks either love their pets or they don't like animals. There seems to be little middle ground.
The chickens and roosters are alive and well and crowing every morning. I visited the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory and although small, was a jewel of a place to visit. My suggestion if you go is to visit during the hottest part of the day. The place was packed with people in the morning which took some of the beauty of the spot away from my visit. Most people retreat back to the pool or the air conditioning during the heat of the day and won't be walking the streets.
I found when I returned home, most of the shelters and rescues here are full to the point of bursting along with most of the foster homes. Money is tight, donations are down as are adoptions. I visited with all my friends at Satchel's Last Resort, took out some donations which had been given me (thanks again, Louie) and walked my buddy, Sandler a long way down Coash Road.
Today it is back to work, back to rescue along with posting the animals. Please remember to donate, volunteer and most important, adopt, don't shop.
