PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING AND I HUMBLY ASK THAT YOU DO WHAT YOU CAN TO HELP US. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE.

LADY (#388) who has been with us the longest is at THE TOP of the list. She is a very sweetcalm mild temperament pitty mix girl (black with white) who could make a very wonderful addition to someone's family. Her name is Lady because she is just that - a little lady. She has been vaccinated. Lady has been recently diagnosed with heartowrm disease. We do have a nice lady who has come forward and is willing to pay the cost of the treatment for Lady. We NEED someone to step up to the plate PLEASE folks with a foster or forever home.....I will get you in touch with the person that said they would pay for with treatment. Please don't wait for the next person to do it because I have been searching for over two months with no takers at all. We had one woman last week tell us she was interested but after repeated attempts to contact her after her original email, we have been unsuccessful in reaching her......We know and understand that the rescues and animal groups are full and have their own issues but GUYS - THIS IS IT FOR LADY! So, if you have been thinking about helping, here is your opportunity! If you can't take her in, I STRONGLY URGE you to cross post, email your animal friends & associates, and please call anyone who can help. This has to be a group effort and time is very short.....we need a commitment before Thursday morning...We have 36 hours from right now. "It only takes one person to throw an animal away but it takes a whole team to find it a new home!" We really need you on our team!

Second on the list is a new resident and the reason he is second is we do not have the capability, time, staff etc.... to be able to provide to him what he needs regarding his injury. We recently took in a black and white pitty / lab mix (best guess?) who was hit by a car and left for dead. His name isGEORGE (#412) and he is extremely friendly, loving, handsome, a little shy and seems to have a very mild temperament. The vet who X-rayed him says he is approximately 9 months old. The vet said that surgery for the femoral neck fracture (top of the femur near hip connection) would be the best case scenario for George (the estimate for surgery was just shy of a thousand dollars and that would include 6-8 weeks of rest, medications, follow-up care, etc....) BUT HE ALSO SAID GEORGE COULD HEAL UP ON HIS OWN IF HE WAS "CRATED & RESTED" FOR 3 TO 4 WEEKS!!! That of course would be wonderful if we could do that but it is not possible at the kennel. George needs a compassionate person to tend to him and his needs and obviously the 3-4 weeks of rest would be the less expensive way to go AND IT IS A VERY DO-ABLE OPTION. The doc said it is not the "optimal option" but because George is young, he probably would heal up just fine. PLEASE CONSIDER TAKING GEORGE AND HELPING HIM REST SO HE CAN RECOVER FROM HIS INJURY. I KNOW HE WILL BE VERY GRATEFUL. JUST LOOK AT THAT SWEET FACE !!!!!!!

I AM GOING TO GIVE YOU A BRIEF RUN DOWN ON THE OTHER DOGS AT THE KENNEL EVEN THOUGH LADY IS #1 AND GEORGE IS #2 BECAUSE IF WE CAN GET THE POPULATION / CAPACITY DOWN, HOPEFULLY THE KENNEL WILL NOT HAVE TO BE PURGED ON THURSDAY MORNING. PLEASE SEE THE FOLLOWING:

1.*****( #407) WE HAVE A LITTLE PUPPY / BABY WHO HAS NOT BEEN NAMED YET. HE IS ADORABLE AND REALLY NEEDS SOMEONE TO GIVE HIM THE ATTENTION HE DESERVES. HE IS APPROXIMATELY 9-12 WEEKS OLD AND WE CANNOT COME UP WITH A BREED. WE HAVE SEVERAL GUESSES FROM STAFF, VET, AND VOLUNTEERS SO HERE IT GOES: BULLDOG/HOUND DOG/ PITTY MIX?? HE IS CUTE AS A BUTTON AND IF YOU CAN TAKE HIM AND PLACE HIM - THAT WOULD BE SO GREAT. HE WAS FOUND IN A RETENTION POND NEAR THE PRISON. HE IS WHITE WITH SPOTS AND HAS TWO ROUND BROWN SPOTS OVER HIS EYES. THIS BABY BOY LONGS TO BE PICKED UP AND WANTS TO PLAY.

2. SADIE (#409) - SHE IS NEW AND BEST GUESSTIMATE IS BRINDLE CATAHOULA / LAB MIX. WE GOT THREE OPINIONS AND EVERYONE SEEMS TO BE CLOSE TO THE SAME PAGE BUT WHO KNOWS?? THIS IS AN EXTREMELY NICE GIRL WHO IS VERY FRIENDLY. SHE IS A YOUNG MOM (picked up as a stray with no puppies) BUT WE DID NOT HAVE A CHANCE TO BRING HER TO VET YET SO I DO NOT HAVE AN IDEA ON APPROXIMATE AGE. HOWEVER, I THINK IT IS SAFE TO SAY SHE IS YOUNGER THAN 2. SHE LOVES TO WALK AND WANTS TO PLEASE. SHE HAS NOT HAD ANY ACCIDENTS IN HER CAGE SO WE ASSUME SHE WAS HOUSEBROKEN & PROBABLY BELONGED TO SOMEONE.

3. ROSIE (#413) - SHE IS ALSO NEW AND IS A BLACK (WITH A LITTLE BIT OF WHITE) PITTY GIRL. WE DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT HER OTHER THAN SHE WAS A STRAY AND SEEMS TO BE VERY WELL BEHAVED, CALM AND IS A VERY FRIENDLY GIRL. SHE HAS A SWEET FACE - take a look at her picture.

A great idea for some very deserving dogs

Satchel's Last Resort, which is the rescue I am affiliated with, has many deserving dogs. We are lucky. Our dogs never have to worry about euthanization because once you have arrived at Satchel's, you are there, if need be, for life. You will have the best we can give you, even if a family is not in your future.
One thing we try and do at Satchel's is keep our dogs entertained with as many enrichment ideas as possible. They go for walks, play time, agility, and car rides. Some dogs enjoy the car rides so much, they think they should only go for car rides and avoid anything else.
How much fun would it be for them to enjoy a ride on a Deere. A John Deere that is. Once again, Gulf Coast Gives has taken on a project for us to help us raise $2500.00 for a Gator for the dogs.
Even the smallest amount of money will help us and provide a wonderful tool for the enrichment of the dogs. (they are so much fun to drive for the humans)
You can donate a little or a lot, in your name or in memory of another or remain anonymous. Please click on this link and consider donating to this worthy cause. We are also a 501(c)3 and any amount you donate is tax deductible so you will receive a break on your income tax. The dogs appreciate it and so do I.

$185 RESCUE DONATION OFFER FOR EACH GIRL

Nika, nothing but affection

Nika is one of the dogs at Satchel's Last Resort who would really like to spend her days in a home with humans and not a kennel.

She was left at the end of the driveway to Satchel's in a crate and the yard man found her there. We might have never noticed her. We got her in the car and took her to the vet since we had no history on her or if she was sick in any way.

When we arrived at the vet office, a person who had just lost a dog to cancer, who looked just like Nika, adopted her. Unfortunately, family circumstances have placed Nika back at the shelter to find a new home and some new humans.

You can’t meet Nika and not love her; she melts at your feet at the first sign of affection. She deserves a home with someone committed to her for life. She has a very strong prey drive, so she cannot be with any other animals, but she’d be a great dog for someone who has a fenced in back yard and who wants a low maintenance dog to snuggle with.

She is a beautiful grey brindle and wiggles like a worm when humans come around. If you would like to meet Nika and she would love to meet with you, please contact Satchel's at comments@satchelslastresort.com and ask about this beautiful girl. She deserves that.

Animal behaviorists have come a long way, still have a long way to go

I read this article the Chicago paper and found it to be pretty comprehensive on what shelters are doing in the animal behavior field. Although I have been involved in this field and with training and working with shelter dogs, I am by no means an expert and continue to read everything I can concerning this field.

I have seen potentially dangerous animals lose their lives due to animal aggression or resource guarding. I have had heated discussions on why I felt an animal should be given a second chance or why I felt it should be euthanized. I tend to agree with part of the article who said these behavior tests are subjective and are left up to the individual testing the animal.

I also know there are behaviors which can be corrected with training. The problem is there are simply not enough trainers or volunteers to handle the number of animals which come into a shelter system. There is not enough time or money to spend on these animals, the "problem children" if you will, so they are killed to make room for the next abandoned pet.

Behaviorally challenged pets are lots of work. I know this because I used to have one. I cannot describe the frustration and fear I sometimes felt in dealing with Jasper, who not only didn't like other animals, but was not fond of people, either. I continued to work with him until the day he crossed the Rainbow Bridge but it wasn't easy. He was the sort of dog who would have been killed immediately in a shelter if he had been given up.

Fortunately for him, when I make a commitment, I follow through and I had done that with Jasper when I brought him into my home.

Feelings run high on this subject. Check out the article here.

Betty's home

The latest addition to my family has finally arrived. She has been home about an hour and things are beginning to settle down.
Buzz is still unsure of her, but has sniffed her all over and gone to lay on his bed. All the toys have been picked up and put away for the time being and no food is out.
The doxies, Hazel and McKenzie are probably going to be the problem. Not so much Hazel, who was raised properly around other dogs and in a dog park, but Kenzie, who has barked non-stop since Betty came in the door. Kenzie is scared of Betty although Betty has shown no aggression towards her and is now sleeping on the tile floor right by my chair while I type this.
Buzz is on Betty's new bed licking his foot and both the doxies are in Emily's chair watching Betty sleep.
Of course, Emily and Jeremy are not here and Emily's nervousness creates nervousness with the dogs, but once again, this is a problem we will simply deal with.
I am happy she is home.

Remind me not to move to Davie, FL

I sometime get irritated at my neighbors for allowing their dogs to be loose in their front yards. They tend to not listen to their owners and roam in everyone's yard, doing their business sometimes creating havoc with the other dogs who are roaming the neighborhood.
But I cannot imagine someone in my neighborhood pulling out a gun and shooting a dog. We have every size and shape of dog in my neighborhood. Even when my rottweilers were still living I did not worry about someone hurting them.
But when someone on a bike intentionally shoots and kills a dog in the dog's front yard, I believe there is a problem. The shooter says the dog attacked him. Unfortunately, the dog can't speak for himself and the owner was in the garage.
Thiw is the 2nd time a dog has been shot to death with the claim the dog was attacking them. I won't be moving to Davie, FL anytime soon.

Shelter pets nobody knows

Before you click on this link, the video is very graphic. It shows what happens to unwanted dogs when they are killed in a shelter in North Carolina. I read somewhere today that for every shelter dog killed, a human was responsible. A human did not spay or neuter their pet. A human dumped a dog out in a rural area to be picked up by a county animal control, to starve to death, to be killed by disease or a wild animal. A human does these things to animals which were pets at one time.
A human moves and does not take their pet with them. A human surrenders their pet because: they don't have time, they don't have energy, they are now having a baby. They___________. You fill in the blanks.
Some days, after spending time at the shelter, I become so discouraged with people. The shelter dogs have such a look of loss in their eyes. They don't know what they have done to end up where they are. Then we have to try and ease their pain and find them a new home where they will be loved and appreciated. It is a lot harder than it seems.
So, please continue to educate people. Please continue to donate your time and money to the animals. If not for you, the situation in this video would be even worse for homeless pets.
Betty is coming home on Sunday. She will never leave here until it is time for her to cross the Rainbow Bridge. If she has issues, I will deal with them with love and firm voice. She and Buzz may have a rough time, but I will deal with it. She was on the euth list because of her crippled leg. She will never have to worry about that again. She has a new orthopedic bed, a new vet, a new collar and leash, new food dishes, a new brother and 2 new little sisters plus 2 more adults to lavish attention on her. I can only hope and prayer many more shelter pets will find a home this holiday season and the trend will continue throughout the year.
