Animal Control: Woman Had Too Many Dogs

People who are animal rescuers tend to have multiple animal households. They may have two or three dogs and four or five cats. I have a friend whose limit is 10 cats. I know people who live in Manatee County who have five dogs and six cats. Multiple animal households are not unusual, especially in the animal care community. As far as I can tell, there is no limit on the number of animals you can have in your household in Charlotte, Manatee or Sarasota counties. An internet search didn't show up any restrictions and from all I have read, this holds true for most of Florida. Animals are considered property in the state and as long as they are not a nuisance or a health hazard, you are pretty much good to go if you want more than one.
Hoarding, on the other hand, is out of control. Hoarding is a disease. Hoarders feel they are saving animals from certain death, collect more and more animals on a daily basis. Many times they cannot afford to feed all the animals. Many do not have the money to have their animal treated medically. This condition continues to spiral out of control until an agency must step in and take over.
So I found this story from California interesting in that a woman had fifteen dogs and because the law says she can only have 3, all fifteen were taken away even though all appeared well-fed and taken care of. She was told she had to pick three.
Please don't tell me how many I can have. If there is a problem, then address that problem individually. In this case, one size doesn't fit all.
