Wild bird behavior

I love my backyard. It is big enough so I can putter around gardening, swim in the pool, watch the dogs play or simply sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and listen to the birds sing.
I have so many different varieties of birds in the backyard, I can't even identify them all but the basics are here: crows, blue jays, mockingbirds, herons, and cardinals. I did once have a Mallard Duck in the pool but he flew away.
A couple of weeks ago, I kept hearing a noise that sounded like pecking on the sliders which lead to the outside. I have three different sets of cardinals which have nests in my backyard and seeing the females, pecking at my sliders was a behavior I had never observed in them before.
So I went and researched why they were doing this. It seems in the spring and early summer, they are protecting their nests and when they see themselves in windows, they believe there are other birds they need to defend themselves and their nests from.
This is not only the males, but the females participating in this action. So to protect them, I got a bar of soap, biodegradable of course, and streaked the sliders with it.
Although I love to watch them and listen to their song, I don't want any of them hurt.

Florida: STILL IN NEED: Stunning German Shepherd puppy Eevie needs a home - 15 m/o

Hi all,
Eevie is just coming out of an intensive training which her foster mom paid or to help Eevie learn some basic obedience. Eevie knows how to sit and stay...but doesn't know where her Forever family is... Can you help?
Eevie needs a home, her Foster mom is getting desperate and due to her demanding work schedule, can't keep fostering. She has been working on find Eevie a home for months now.
Eevie was found in a drain pipe abused and abandoned. She is absolutely STUNNING and sweet. She is still at times shy of strangers but is learning to trust again. This spayed, up to date 15month old baby girl gets along with other dogs too!
If you know anybody interested in adopting Eevie, please call Tracey at (786)402-7794

Chipley, FL - Lady and 6 four week old pups need rescue

Animal Control of West Florida
Chipley FL
This is a privately run shelter.  Two counties pay for this service.  $8 a day per animal for 5 days.  After that, the animals can be put down.  If they live more than 5 days the owner is losing money.  Donations can be made so the animals can live longer until a rescue can be arranged.  Please contact Belva at 850-260-6781 or Sue Bruce at bruces@flcourts.org.
We can still get them on transport this Saturday.  The pups are now FOUR weeks old.  You know that is not good for them to be in a shelter another whole week.  They have already been there one week.  Please try to help.  She is a very good dog and a very good mom and people friendly.
If you can rescue, you pull for free.  You can call Belva at 850-260-6781 or email Sue Bruce at bruces@flcourts.org.  Sue is also the transport coordinator which is on SATURDAYS only unless you can arrange something else on your own.  Belva works only part time from 8 am til 1 pm.  Everyone else associated with saving these animals are volunteers.
The animals are on facebook- Friends of Chipley Animals- and on petfinder.
Thank you for all you do to help us save these animals.

Very sweet guy!!!

This boy has some eye issues that he was obviously born with.  One eye is sunken in and smaller than the other and the “normal size” eye is cloudy and the pupil isn’t quite “right” – he does have limited vision – the vet feels most of the vision he does have comes from the smaller eye.  He would definitely need to see an eye doc to make a determination.

He is very loving and an all around good boy.  It is possible he could have some hearing issues also but it has not been determined as of yet at the shelter.

Sarasota, Fl-Satchel's Last Resort welcomes a new, SMALL guest who is looking for a forever home

Oliver arrived at Satchel's this past Friday and has now been added to our website:

http://www.satchelslastresort.com/adopt/oliver

Are you looking to adopt a small and very cute dog?  Well, then you should make an appointment right now to come and meet Oliver.

We don't know what kind of dog Oliver is but he looks like a mix between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund.  From a distance, he looks like a Dachshund because of his long body but up close, he looks like a Chihuahua.

He is the cutest little thing and he is a sweetheart.  He can be a little timid at first but he quickly warms up.

He loves to go for walks and is really good on the leash.  Seems like he is good with other dogs.  We don't recommend him for someone with small children though as they scare him. A yard would be a plus but is not absolutely necessary.  He does that crazy little dog happy run - he runs for the sheer joy of running.

Miniature Schnauzer (SALT/PEPPER) sweet poor boy-read his story (DogsandCatsForever.com)

Miniature Schnauzer needs to be rescued ASAP. He came to the shelter with his brother from a hoarding situation wherein he and his brother were STARVED in a CAGE and his brother was adopted yesterday. We were advised from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary to separate them so they could bond with their new families. So we did. But the cute salt/pepper boy feels left behind. He doesn't want to eat. He's depressed. He is up to date on vaccines, neutered and just groomed. He's 2 years old. Must be a home without small children. He does get along with other dogs, but is afraid of men. Our trainer will come to your home once for free to help you work with this poor boy. His name is Benny!! He's a sweetheart. There is an adoption fee. Contact DogsandCatsForever.com or 772-489-5454, ask for Christine or Jay.

Sarasota County Commissioners voting on Dog Hog Hunt on July 10th

PLEASE pass this on to everyone!
The Sarasota County Commissioners' meeting regarding a
DOG HOG HUNT has been changed to
July 10th, Tuesday, at 1:30 at the South County Courthouse, in Venice -4000 South Tamiami Trail.
PLEASE ATTEND - WE NEED NUMBERS THERE TO REPRESENT A HUMANE VOICE.

PLEASE email the commissioners
to vote against the proposal to conduct a any hog hunts with dogs on the Deer Creek Preserve and the Shewe Tract.
Email:
commissioners@scgov.net

The ONLY weapons used to kill these huge hogs are DOGS AND KNIVES. That's right, no guns, they are STABBED TO DEATH.
Children are allowed to watch or participate.
The hogs are mutilated and suffer a slow and torturous death.
Dogs are often maimed and suffer and can die a horrible death.
There are other viable methods to control the hog population.

We acknowledge the hog population needs to be controlled, but NOT LIKE THIS.

Hialeah, FL - Young Bully x found, please network

Hi,

I found this boy lost and scared in Hialeah in an area where dogs are dumped. He had no collar, I asked around and no one knew him, no one has put up signs and I had him scanned and he has no chip. I cannot keep him because I have 4 dogs, 3 cats and live with my parents. I have been trying desperately to find him a rescue, foster or adopter with no luck. If I take him to the shelter here which is high kill he will not make it especially since they will probably label him as a pit mix.  He looks like an american bulldog mix, probably about 1 year old, unaltered. He is super sweet. Please help this boy!! Brenda 786-218-4428. I cant hold him much longer.

Gainesville, FL -Sadie, Jack Russell, Still needs rescue at Alachua County Animal Services

Good evening. We have a Jack Russell at Alachua County Animal Services, Gainesville, FL needing rescue. Here is Sadie’s story.

Just spoke with person surrendering Sadie to the shelter. The person obtained the dog originally from a house guest a little over a year ago. Because the woman is wheelchair bound, she found Sadie a home a week later with a family she thought would take care of her. As it turned out, that wasn’t the case. The original owner said the last owner complained of Sadie getting into the trash and soiling in house. The original owner, on the other hand, said Sadie never bothered the trash and, because she was walked three times a day, never soiled in the house. Sadie was said to be neglected  by last owner and returned with skin issues. Original owner said Sadie could be allergic to red dye. She said when she stopped foods containing red dye—and giving her Benadryl—her skin seemed to get better. The original person said Sadie –when with her—was well-behaved. Was not afraid of her wheelchair or oxygen machine. Sadie would curl up with her on the couch and sleep with her. Original owner did say that Sadie doesn’t like cats. I observed Sadie to initially ignore the cats in the cat room, but later start growling at them. She barks and growls at some dogs at the shelter, but ignores others. The original owner said Sadie got along with child of person who returned dog to her. Original owner says Sadie  just needs to be loved…a stable home. I sat on the floor with her and told her to sit. She did. When she noticed I had a treat in my hand, she sat up and begged (photo attached). Please let us know if you can take her into your program. She truly is a people dog. If not rescued soon, she will be placed on next week’s Euth list. Time is of the essence.
