Backyard breeders

One of the most irritating topics animal welfare people hear, is the propaganda of backyard breeders. Now, I am not talking about a family who simply fails to fix their pet and they get pregnant, or another dog gets them pregnant. That is a whole topic of itself. I am speaking of people who intentionally breed their dog over and over for puppies to sell.
They think they can justify this by telling people how much they love the breed. They sometimes use their children as objects saying they want the kids to experience the wonder of birth. They use many excuses but the bottom line is really the answer. They can make money if they can sell puppies.
The reason I bring this up now after simmering on the back burner several months is due to a sign I saw driving home from work today. It was a decorated sign, in a nice, deed-restricted community advertising Jack Russell puppies for sale. It irritated me, it really did.
With the economy being in the tank right now, and hundreds, if not thousands of companion animals being housed in shelters and rescues, some simply awaiting their execution, with well over 200 Baby Jack Russells or mixes of Jack Russells on www.petfinder.com, I stopped counting at 200 in the southern states alone), some idiot is still breeding more dogs and putting them in the population to make more money.
When are people going to stop this insanity of indiscriminate breeding all for the sake of money? When are states going to simply enact some laws to license breeders to stop the influx of new animals? The amount of money counties must now spend on animal control is astronomical. All to kill animals. The more animals is the general population, the more animals are put to death because there are no homes available.
There has to be a better solution. It is simply up to us to find it.
