Sandler, what an awesome dog
I, like so many of my counterparts in the rescue world, work with lots of dogs. Many of the dogs I work with need a little bit of extra attention.Sandler was one of those dogs. He had been in three different spots before he landed at Satchel's Last Resort because of his energy level. There was no one to give him the one-on-one attention he so desperately needed. Then he met me. For some reason he liked me and was willing to work with me. His attention span was that of a gnat and I really needed to try and get him focused to allow that energy to come out in positive ways.
Whatever I, and the rest of the staff and volunteers have been doing is working. Instead of reacting like a wild teenager, he has become a wonderful, love bug of a dog who simply wants to please.
Now, he is still full of energy which is normal for his breed. He is a mix of black labrador and boxer, so the high energy is a natural occurance.
Sandler is also smart. He is one of the smartest dogs I have come in contact with. He looks at you with a quizzical look as if to say, "What is it? What do you want me to do? Just tell me and I will do it to please you."
He knows he will not be taken out of his kennel until he is sitting calmly. If he jumps up at the gate, I simply stand there until he is calm. We are working on his leash manners, but he does know heel. I think he is just trying me to see what he can get away with.
Sandler is not the dog for you if you want to stick him in a backyard with no human stimulation. He will jump a fence and be gone, looking for a human to care for him
Sandler is also not the dog for you if you want a couch potato. He doesn't know the meaning.
If you are looking for a best friend, someone to go jogging with or share a game a catch with, Sandler is your dog. If you need a cuddle bug after a game of frisbee or squirrel chase, Sandler is the boy for you.
He would do best in an adult only household and used to get along with other dogs, so if you are looking for a second pet to be a companion for your first one, Sandler may fit right in.
