There is always hope

I have written about shy dogs before and last week I wrote about boomerang dogs. I heard from a friend of mine who has one of each. Gizmo was very shy and afraid and Jazz had been returned to the shelter 4 time for different issues. This was the response I got to the boomerang blog with an update on the dogs. There is a home out there for every dog. It is the humans who don't want to work. Gizmo and Jazz are proof of that.
"From the owner of a "boomerang dog" and a "gizmo" (who was a quick return and sat in the shelter... didn't even have a chance TO boomerang), I loved the piece in your column. As an update- Jazzy starts Canine Good Citizen Class on Saturday. I have no idea if she will pass the test or not- but I know she "can." Her obedience (when she knows it is "obedience" time) is exemplary. Her focus is extraordinary, so we'll see. Jazzy and Gizmo wil go to Orlando on 6/13-14 for a flyball tournament.
Gizmo is having a great time and has completely come out of her shell. She still runs with the beginner team, but has a great time being the "boss" of that team and teaching the new dogs what to do and where to go. If she ever figures out that flyball is actually a race, perhaps she could run on a better team- but right now she likes playing with the new kids. I think she likes people watching her strut down the lane to be honest. The dog can run like the wind when she wants to. BUT, for a dog who was scared of her shadow when we brought her home, she has turned into a social butterfly. She has 4 boyfriends and 2 girlfriends on the flyball team that she squeals and rolls over and gives kisses to now.
Jazzy is working on her Flyball Master Excellent title (10,000 points earned- at either 1, 5, or 25 points per race she runs depending on time this is a milestone!). She has a chance at getting it in Orlando in June. It will be meaningful if she gets it there, as her first race ever was in Orlando exactly 2 years ago. She has turned her neurotic energy towards flyball (and whatever she can find in a trash can, but that is our fault for not emptying them). I'm glad no one else wanted her and that she picked me to come home with."
These are the stories you never hear or read about in newspapers. The positive things shelter dogs can accomplish with a dedicated family.
