Food aggression in dogs

I have read tons of information on food aggression in dogs and began when my dogs were very young, to make sure they did not possess this bad habit.
They don't, but many dogs do. When I was a child, my parents taught me to leave animals alone while they were eating because you never know if a dog is food aggressive or not. Sometimes when we were visiting other families with dogs (which happens a lot when you are on a military base), the dogs were fed in a separate room from the kids, just to make there were no bite problems.
Shelter dogs can pose a whole new array of issues with food aggression. Sometimes they have been neglected to the point of emaciation. If a person or other animal comes near their food, they growl or snap because they were starved before.
Food aggression can be corrected with patience and care, but many people who want to adopt shelter dogs are not willing to take on this problem, especially if they have small children in the home. The chance of a bite is much higher with a toddler, than a teen, since you can explain to a teen the issues the animal has.
