Publishing the numbers

With all my talk of no-kill agencies, no BSL, and barbaric euthanasia practices, I was pleased to see at least one rescue agency in this area, which includes Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties, publishes their numbers. Now, the county you live in has to keep these records public, but private agencies do not. I have argued this for as long as I have been rescuing. Let the public see the numbers. Let them see how many animals you take in and what happens to them. Most are not aware of the thousands of animals taken in or adopted out. Euthanasia numbers are not popular reading and a lot of agencies in our area are not ready to explain why they have high euthanasia numbers.
A friend of mine forwarded this link for the Humane Society of Manatee County. It is their numbers. They don't have to publish them on their webpage, but they do. Kudos to them. So when you get ready to contribute to an agency which is open about what they do, keep them in mind. Honesty is always the best policy.
