Unselfish friends
"The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. . . .He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. . . .When all other friends desert, he remains." - George G Vest
The poem above always comes to mind when I see people 'rehoming' their beloved pet because he needs more attention, more room, more exercise or any of the other things humans decide their dogs need more of and cannot provide.
I saw an interesting ad on craigslist for a herding dog puppy. I found it interesting because they were charging a small fee but the dog needed an active family due to his breed. Now, if you are getting a new pup, and you know the breed is a herding breed, why would you adopt it if you couldn't provide the activity it needed to flourish?
So another dog comes into the system, to be passed around and around until he doesn't know where he belongs because a human thinks they need more of something.
I know circumstances sometimes cause people to give up their pets. I just think the excuses people use make them look really dumb. How much do you want to bet in three month's time they will be at another shelter, or looking on craigslist at another animal, who may be perfect for them this time around. The problem is, most times it won't be and then the newest animal will be sent from place to place with no idea who he is supposed to love. I wonder sometimes what the dogs think, as they are passed from home to home, shelter to shelter. They are the most unselfish creatures I know who belong to some of the planet's most selfish ones.
