Horribly inhumane

For anyone who has grown up in the deep south or rural midwest, confronting the accepted killing of hundreds of dog due to illiterate people or financially strapped county animal facilities is a fact that is hard to get past.
Many uneducated and poor people do not see the value in spaying or neutering and the result is an overabundance of unwanted dogs and cats. Put that in a poorer region of the country where money is tight and homeless animal care not high on the list of where to spend the money, and you have massive numbers of dogs and cats killed on a daily basis.
This is not the euthanasia of a doctor's office where the animal gets a shot and goes to sleep, but a place where animals are sent to a gas chamber, or in some spots, placed in an animal control truck with a hose running from the exhaust to the truck to kill the animals from carbon monoxide poisoning. I cannot imagine a more horrible death.
I was interested to read the news story out of North Carolina, where an gas chamber blew up and injured the worker operating it. It put off the killing of hundreds until they could get it fixed. This was why I got the email. Folks in that area were trying to save as many of the animals as they could, until the gas chamber was operational again.
North Caroline, a very wealthy state in some areas, still using a gas chamber to kill unwanted animals is simply not humane to me. It does happen all over the south and midwest. Now we have laws to prevent cruelty to animals, but is this any better?
