Holiday spirit

Christmas is two weeks from Saturday and I don't have my tree up yet. I have not stuffed Buzz's stocking. I keep thinking I have plenty of time and then another day passes and it is not done.
Holidays for rescue workers seem to the one of the busiest times of the year. This is not due to so many animals finding homes, but quite the opposite.
Many people choose this time of year to get rid of their pets. What should be one of the most joyous times of year, proves to be one of the most sad.
When confronted with an owner whose Christmas puppy last year now weighs 130 pounds, it is sometimes hard not to open your mouth and chastise the owners who now want something smaller.
When an owner brings in a full grown cat because they decided they wanted cute little kittens instead, your blood pressure rises.
It is at times like this you must bite your tongue until it is bloody, smile and call upon your Christmas spirit to help you make it through.
So you tell yourself the animal is better off with you, not the irresponsible person dumping them off.
The truth is, the animal is better off in a home. I will say again to all the naysayers who believe animal rescue people who disdain puppy mills, stores where they sell live animals and believe we simply don't want them to have a puppy or a kitten I say, put us out of business. Adopt a shelter animal instead. Have your pet spayed or neutered.
It hasn't happened yet nor will it probably happen in my lifetime. It could, but it won't.
Please opt to adopt this holiday season. Keep the spirit of Christmas alive for some abandoned animal who will spend Christmas without a family unless you help.
