What's wrong with this picture?

Since this morning I seem to be on my soapbox about spay/neuter and breed specific legislation, puppy mills are also going to take a hit.
I have spoken to many, many people in the last several weeks who are appalled at the puppy mill situation, but...they did buy a dog from a pet store and the dog was fine.
Wait a minute. How can you be appalled and then buy a dog from a pet store? Every puppy adopted from a pet store is a puppy mill puppy. Their moms and dads are raised and bred in deplorable conditions, over and over again until they are used up. Then are destroyed because they are not worth money anymore. They just busted another one in North Carolina with almost 300 Lhasa Apsos, Shih-Tzus and Chihuahuas, who were suffering from serious medical ailments and housed in filthy conditions. Many of the dogs were emaciated, had untreated lacerations, severely matted fur and serious skin and eye infections.
If you are in doubt, check out the HSUS link about puppy mills and see how you can help.
The daily headlines all over the country are layoffs and the bad economy. Foreclosures and debt. If the people in this country are suffering in this way, why are all these puppy mills still in business? How can they afford to pay for these puppies?
Please, if you are able to care for an animal, opt to adopt, don't buy a puppy. If people would stop, puppy mills would close down.
