Oreo's Law

The killing of the dog named Oreo by the ASPCA has riled up many animal lovers including some New York Legislators who are sponsoring Oreo's Law. You can read about it here and voice your opinion.
Although animals are killed on a daily basis under the "unadoptable" tag, many of us in animal welfare believe we can rehabilitate and if we can't, we can provide sanctuary because each life is special.
Many sanctuaries provide lifelong care for dogs and cats who would be destroyed in other traditional shelters. These animals may have a medical problem as simple as being blind, or a behavior problem like jumping.
Some may have suffered such abuse at the hands of a human they will never overcome their fears of most people.
I cannot tell you the number of times I personally know of where an animal could have been saved, but no attempt was even made to place it in a true sanctuary, so the animal died.
It does not say much for the animal welfare community that a law must be enacted when a sanctuary steps up to save an animal from euthanasia, the shelter where the dog or cat resides must be made to do it because of the law, and not simply because of their love of the animal.
